Biologics differ from pharmaceutical medications in their origin. Pharmaceutical preparations are formulated in a laboratory and manufacturing center, whereas biologics are acquired through living organisms. One of the most effective treatments for Dry Eye Disease (Ocular surface disease) is amniotic membrane therapy.
Amniotic membrane is a rich source of biologically active factors that promote healing and act as an effective material for ocular surface disruptions and wounds. It is well established that amniotic membranes support healing and suppress scarring, inflammation, and infection.
Amniotic membranes have been demonstrated to improve ocular surface disease, persistent epithelial defects (PEDs), non-healing corneal ulcers, bullous keratopathy, poor healing associated with limbal stem cell deficiency, and corneoscleral melts.
At James Lewis MD Ophthalmology, we provide several amniotic membrane therapies for appropriate candidates who meet any of the above criteria (among others). This is not a first-line therapy nor a cure-all for frustrated patients, but it is an excellent option and is available as an in-office procedure.
We offer amniotic membrane therapy in different modalities including: cryogenically preserved discs under bandage contact lenses for 3-7 days, Prokera memrbanes with symblepharon rings, and liquid amnion is now available for use under scleral contact lenses.
